| Artist's Statement |
| The reuse and recycling of materials is an important role for any contemporary artist today, especially artists developing careers in urban areas. As a student of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I learned that the city has quite a bit more to offer than it’s scrubbed Magnificent Mile and overpriced Rush Street, not only in atmosphere, but also in culture, art, and resources. In creating my work, I hope to relay some of that information into the pieces. The most important of these elements include aspects of ‘discarded industry’, elements of architecture, cultural references unique to Chicago and it’s industrial sectors, and an important outlook on the future and nature’s importance to humankind. As well, I find my inspiration in found materials, and usually use them as a platform to work off of. For instance, the circuit boards are an acquired item that I came across in Chicago. I had no previous notions of building lamps with circuit boards, but the material created the inspiration in designing and constructing of these lamps. |
